Part of the philosophy and mission of our school is to establish a meaningful academic foundation to prepare each student for a role in the world as a Catholic adult. We are committed to teaching the love of God, others, and self. St. John the Evangelist, in close and vital cooperation with our parents, enjoys the challenges of educating and preparing our children to advance to the next level with the knowledge, skills, and courage that they need to be successful.
Curriculum
St. John the Evangelist follows the Diocese of Columbus Office of Catholic Schools courses of study. Each course of study is based on national standards as well as Ohio’s Academic Content Standards, and includes additional objectives designed to help students achieve academic success.
These learning objectives reach beyond the scope of national and state standards, while integrating elements of our Catholic faith. Student progress is reported through Diocesan progress reports each quarter of the school year. Progress reports include subcategories from each course of study that highlight the major components of the subject. This allows teachers to indicate strengths and areas for improvement in specific areas.
Student Support
At St. John the Evangelist, we fully recognize the diversity of academic needs and individuality of each student. All students are deserving of respect, love, and support as children of God, and we strive to guide each student on a pathway to success. Administrators, teachers, our public district, parents, and parishioners each have a unique responsibility in living out our school's mission with every one of our students, and generously assist us in providing: - academic aides - intervention specialists - classroom resources - speech and occupational therapists - continuing education for staff
Core Subjects
All students receive a thorough education in the core areas of mathematics, ELA, science, social studies, and health. Our classroom teachers structure their school days to emphasize the importance of critical topic knowledge and critical thinking that will serve them beyond the classroom. A diverse range of weekly specials are offered each day.
The Ruah Way
St. John the Evangelist School integrates a Catholic anthropology to form and educate students in their dignity as children of God. This approach includes incorporating the curriculum from the Ruah Woods, inspired by the theology of the body and thought of St. John Paul II. The Ruah Way's four cornerstones are: - Sacramental Worldview - Experiential Learning - Awaken Wonder - Dialogical Approach
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is part of our faith formation program for our preschool through 6th grade students. It is a reflective-based and retreat-like program that helps our students to further encounter and develop his/her relationship with Christ, the Good Shepherd, in a developmentally appropriate way. It is rooted in Sacred Scripture, the Liturgy, and the educational philosophy of Maria Montessori.
The materials and curriculum were developed by Sofia Cavalletti, a Scripture scholar, and Gianna Gobbi, a Montessorian. Through this collaboration the curriculum has richly grown to provide a curriculum that speaks to the child’s religious potential and offers an opportunity for prayer, meditation, and religious development.
